A funny thing happens when you try to tell people humans can fly: They tend to assume you’re being metaphorical.
“Ah, I get it!” they say. “When you say ‘humans can fly,’ what you actually mean is that people are free to be who they want to be and live the life of their dreams!”
And while that is part of the truth, it’s not the whole truth.
When I say humans can fly, yes, I partially mean it as a metaphor — that we are free to feel, free to think, free to act, etc.
But I also mean it literally: Humans can fly.
We are free in so many ways — free, even, from the so-called “Laws” of Physics.
Free to lift right up off the ground and float up into the sky.
Free to literally, physically, actually, fly.
Mystical Metaphorization
In all my work as a re-minder of human spiritual potential and psychic superpowers, I have encountered no concept-creep more insidious, deluding and self-limiting than that of Mystical Metaphorization.
Many people who are into mysticism, are in a really baddddd habit of assuming that all mystical texts are actually meant to be interpreted Metaphorically — and assuming that their wildly off-base interpretations make them super special and enlightened or whatever.
So they’ll consume mystical teachings, then go, “Ah yes, I’m going to take this concept which was conveyed in plain, direct language, and mangle it beyond all recognition with needlessly elaborate metaphorical interpretations, then call that True Understanding. Then I’ll make fun of anyone who doesn’t have Ears to Hear and Eyes to See like I do!”
And it’s just so… secondhand embarrassing 🥲
My latest encounter with the mind-fuckery of Mystical Metaphorization happened on my last post about Parthenogenesis, or Virgin Birth — which is actually a well-documented phenomenon that has occurred all throughout the animal kingdom, including in human women — and not just in the Virgin Mary, but in many women. Countless women.
A commenter (who deleted her own comments when I responded with questions about her assertions) went off about how “the Virgin Birth iS aCtUaLLy a MeTaPhOr for pineal gland activation.” Or something.
When I asked how she could say that it’s “just” a Metaphor, when there are literal documented cases of virgin birth happening throughout history (physically! like for-real for-real!), she incoherently doubled-down on the non-sense, and then got mean-spirited, as ideologues are apt to do.
Now, I’m not relaying this exchange to single her out. In fact, this one exchange represents many similar exchanges I’ve had, wherein people who fancy themselves as “having ears to hear,” elaborately tangle themselves up in paranoid red string trying to explain the “REAL meaning” of mystical texts, such as the Bible.
And when I ask, “Have you considered that the words just mean exactly what they say?” they get Big Mad.
Mysunderstandings
I’ve heard so many off-the-wall theories about how Jesus was “actually” just a Metaphor for the Sun, or Lucifer, or Jupiter, or self-realization… and not a literal miracle-worker who healed the sick and raised the dead, and said we could (and will) do greater works than he did.
I’ve also suffered through many a theory of how the crucifixion was “actually” a Metaphor for a Kundalini Awakening, or ego death, or anything but an actual demonstration of Immortality…
and so on, and so on.
Even Christians who do believe that Jesus existed, literally performed miracles, and resurrected himself from the dead, still think that when he said “you will live forever,” he meant this as a Metaphor about the afterlife.
No, my friends. He was straight-up talking about Physical Immortality — eternal life, here and now, in this incarnation, in this body.
And they believe the verse about how we can move mountains with the faith of a mustard seed is a Metaphor for overcoming life’s difficulties, but not a literal statement about using telekinesis to physically move mountains… even though that’s what he actually said.
He could not have used plainer language.
And yet, the point remains — woefully and widely — missed.
Yes, And
Relatedly, many self-described mystical people think Alchemy — the magickal process of turning lead into gold — is “JuSt a MeTaPhOr” for self-improvement… ignoring the many historical anecdotes of alchemists actually turning lead into gold.
And Alchemy is a great illustration of my next point, which is that all Truths are metaphorically and literally true at the same time.
i.e.
“Alchemy is a metaphor for making the unconscious conscious.”
YES,
AND
“The practice of alchemy can literally turn lead into gold as well.”
The reason all Truths are simultaneously metaphorical and literal, is because ours is a multidimensional universe. So there are “dense” dimensions where things are “materially real” so to speak, and subtle dimensions like the astral and etheric planes, where we find abstractions and symbolism.
This is why Jesus is able to embody qualities of the Sun (and his 12 disciples, qualities of the signs that revolve around him) and also be a real-live-person-who-actually-existed-and-had-superpowers.
Just as I explained in my post Why I Believe in Astrology, we are the planets embodied. We are thoughtforms. We are made of poetry, images, music, and yes, metaphors — and we are literally physical, visceral beings of flesh-and-blood.
Simultaneously. Both. Nuance.
As above,
so below.
Humans — like everything else in existence — exist across all these frequency bands of reality simultaneously. High and low. Subtle and coarse. Physical and metaphysical. All these layers of reality are seamlessly interwoven within us, making total distinction between “Metaphor” and “Literality” nearly impossible.
Still, we try.
But why?
True Gnosis
One of my favorite Bible passages is Matthew 12:22-32, wherein Jesus is accused of working with Beelzebub:
22 Then some people brought Yeshua a man possessed by a demon. The demon made the man blind and unable to talk. Yeshua cured him so that he could talk and see.
23 The crowds were all amazed and said, “Can this man be the Son of David?” 24 When the Pharisees heard this, they said, “This man can force demons out of people only with the help of Beelzebul, the ruler of demons.”
25 Since Yeshua knew what they were thinking, he said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is ruined. And every city or household divided against itself will not last. 26 If Satan forces Satan out, he is divided against himself. How, then, can his kingdom last? 27 If I force demons out of people with the help of Beelzebul, who helps your followers force them out? That’s why they will be your judges. 28 But if I force demons out with the help of God’s Spirit, then the kingdom of God has come to you. 29 How can anyone go into a strong man’s house and steal his property? First he must tie up the strong man. Then he can go through his house and steal his property.
30 “Whoever isn’t with me is against me. Whoever doesn’t gather with me scatters. 31 So I can guarantee that people will be forgiven for any sin or cursing. However, cursing the Spirit will not be forgiven. 32 Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven. But whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven in this world or the next.
Fancy that: The Pharisees, who fancied themselves religious authorities who were more righteous and spiritual than everyone else, could not believe a miraculous healing when it was performed right in front of their eyes.
So they jumped to the conclusion that it must have been the work of the Devil.
In cool response, Jesus essentially said, “Be careful not to call the Holy Spirit anything other than what it is.”
In plain language, he was explaining that those who fail to accurately perceive the Holy Spirit when it is revealed to them, are damned not only in this dimension (the physical) but in other dimensions as well (the metaphysical).
To rephrase: The “forgiveness of sins” is contingent upon a willingness To See Things As They Are. This is to accept Truth, in its fullness.
The ability and willingness to do this, is our only means of making the unconscious conscious. It’s our ticket “out” of the Land of the Dead, and into Eternal Life.
The Land of the Dead
What makes this the Land of the Dead, is that almost everyone in this realm is inert. Not making any sort of spiritual progress. In a state akin to sleepwalking, like zombies. Unconscious.
What makes the dead dead (unconscious), is their lack of Power. Lifeforce. Bioelectricity. Prana.
When you do not have Power in yourself,
you will perceive Power as anything other than what it is:
A hallucination.
A dream.
A coincidence.
A trick of the light.
The work of the Devil.
A misunderstanding.
Pseudoscience.
Only a Metaphor.
And you will bar yourself from ever finding out the Truth,
by no other force than your own self-inflicted refusal
to hear what is being said to you in plain language,
to see what is being shown to you in plain sight,
and to be That Which You Are:
I AM.

Here's to plain language and plain sight. As Paul urged in 1 Corinthians 7:30: "Don't complicate your lives unnecessarily."
