Today is a birthday of sorts.
At the end of the last year, I got a message from a music producer named Grayson Cain. He said he’d found my music on Bandcamp, liked my voice, and wanted to collaborate.
Now, see, I’m very picky about who I collaborate with. But when I listened to the demo tracks he sent over, I knew there was something special here, eager to be co-created.
So for the past few months, we’ve been sending files back and forth, laying the groundwork, refining the vision…
We chose the name “Achroma Flux” to honor both our names (“Achroma” for Alicen GREY and GRAY-son Cain, and “Flux” to acknowledge the dynamic, flowing nature of our collaboration).
We named the song “The Lovers” like the infamous major arcana card.
And now, here it is:
“The Lovers” by Achroma Flux

Lyrics:
i made the darkness, i made the light
i made you a paradise, you didn’t like
i made you the ruler, over it all
you made me a monster and chose to fallwhen the one who loves you
changes their mind
when the hand that reached for you
robs you blind
when the voice that blessed you
delivers a curse
come on, do your worstyou won’t get far
you’re looking at exactly what you aremy question for you is, can you love like me?
see what i’m made of and still believe?
meet my dark side and want to see
more of me?you call me the water, the giver of life
then you call me the fire, blazing higher and higher and higher and higher and higher
whether wave or flame, i’m going to rise
i’m going to test you, over time
let’s see what part of you survives,
and which was a liarwhen the one who loves you
changes their mind
when the hand that reached for you
robs you blind
when the voice that blessed you
delivers a curse
come on, do your worstyou won’t get far
you’re looking at exactly what you aremy question for you is, can you love like me?
see what i’m made of and still believe?
meet my dark side and want to see
more of me
more of me
more of me
more of me?
Can you love like me?
I wrote the lyrics inspired by this controversial Bible verse, Isaiah 45:7 KJV —
I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil:
I the LORD do all these things.
Though the KJV translation of this verse is largely considered errant (and God could more accurately said to have created “calamity”), I admit, I did enjoy contemplating the possibility that God creates evil, rather than merely allowing it (as God-sympathizers, like myself, often contend).
This contemplation weaves nicely into my views on the The Garden of Eden in Genesis. God essentially created paradise for Adam and Eve, but they chose to believe — for no discernible reason — that God was evil, and was hiding knowledge from them. I elaborate on that in this sermon:
So then I thought,
if God can still love us abundantly, despite how much we’ve cursed and rejected God…
and the Christ path is about becoming like God, if not unified with God…
can we love like God?
And what would that entail?!
It sounds like work.
Deep, scary work.
You might even call it… Shadow Work 😉

Thank you for creating beautiful art with profound and divine meanings and motifs.
WOW, Alicen and Grayson. I have goosebumps. It’s profoundly fulfilling when everyone brings the best of themselves to a collaboration and creates a gestalt that exceeds the individual parts. The lyrics, vocals, and music all coalesce to create a haunting, emotionally evocative, and thought-provoking work of art. Congratulations to you both, and I look forward to hearing more fruitful collaborations!
