Update: I wrote this in 2015 as I was just starting to learn about cults, so I wasn't being careful with my use of the word "cult." Now I know better than to call veganism a cult, and I wish to retract that statement in exchange for more nuance. It would be more accurate to say that the specific NYC-based animal rights groups I was involved in, had cultic qualities. I would also say that ethical veganism resembles a self-sealing ideology. But "cult" was not the right word here, and I sincerely apologize for my irresponsible and insulting use of the word.
